2012 has been a momentous year for the UK, not least because of the fact that it played host to the world’s biggest sporting showpiece, but there have been so many other events that have helped to attract a number of visitors from all over the world. Over the course of the year, so much has been going on in Great Britain that visitors have been spoilt for choice as to what they would like to see and do, whether they decided to discover the Lake District or spend their time in a big city like London.

Arguably the biggest event of 2012 was the Olympic Games in London. The games themselves, not to mention the Olympic torch route that went all over the country captured the public’s imagination, while visitors from abroad were also impressed at how enjoyable everything Games-related was. London 2012 dominated the year in terms of entertainment, but there were a few other notable events this year.

London

2012 was the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, while there was also a royal wedding taking place. The Royal Family are very popular with many tourists from abroad, not least the United States, where they receive plenty of media coverage. Perceived by many to be quintessentially British, everything they do attracts worldwide attention, and the chance to see celebrations all over the country may have helped to persuade many tourists to stay in the UK this year.

As this year begins to draw to a close, what does next year have in store? The Champions League final is the biggest game in club football, and takes place at London’s 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in May, while the Wimbledon tennis tournament, the Chelsea Flower Show and even literary festivals in places such as Hay-on-Wye are also happening in 2013.

To go to any of those events, you might want to find places to stay. There are a number of great holiday cottages in places such as the Lake District, Peak District and Snowdonia in north Wales that provide warmth, comfort and convenience, and they’re all surprisingly easy to access by car too.
