Ready… Steady… Shop — Around the Shopping Malls of the UAE

Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer visitors the opportunity to spend, spend, spend in some of the world’s most luxurious shopping malls. Dubai is a mecca for shopaholics looking to spoil themselves with designer brand names and shopping in Abu Dhabi is just as indulgent, with its spacious air-conditioned malls.

The Dubai Mall

Mall of Emirates

Also in Dubai, The Mall of Emirates is another popular place to shop ’til you drop featuring everything from high-end designer stores such as Harvey Nichols to department stores like Debenhams. If you want to take a break from shopping, the indoor ski slope offers a cooling alternative for a few hours and you can sample the diverse cuisines on offer in one of a multitude of high quality restaurants.

Attracting tens of thousands of avid shoppers every day to the 200-plus shops, the Abu Dhabi Mall boasts many big-name outlets such as Paris Gallery, Zara and Jashanmal. This mall is an entire shopping destination under one roof with shoppers able to whet their appetite with perfumes, accessories, clothing, home furnishings and cosmetics.

This mall is a landmark in Abu Dhabi and shoppers can make a whole day of a trip here with an ice rink, bowling alley, cinema and a 100-metre high viewing platform to entertain anyone wanting to take a break from trawling the shops.

Along with Dubai and Abu Dhabi, another emirate stands out for its shopping opportunities; namely, Ajman and the City Centre Ajman mall. If you love to shop but don’t have an expendable budget to enjoy the glitz and glamour in the neighboring emirates, this is the mall for you as it is home to a selection of mid-market fashion brands.

Popular markets

The UAE may just be one of the only places in the world where all that glitters is gold. The shimmering beauty of the world’s most popular precious metal can be enjoyed everywhere. While the lavish and uber-stylish malls dominate the skyline, the traditional souks (markets) are where shopper’s come to try their hand at haggling whether it be for gold or spices. The ambiance in the Middle-Eastern style bazaars is full of energy and everything from Morocco lamps, colorful rugs and saris through to gold, beaded cushion covers and Arabian antiques can be purchased.

Shopping advice

Shopping in the high-end designer malls is perfect for anyone with money to burn, while bargain hunters should head to a souk instead. Shopping in the souks can be hot work, so cover your skin with a lightweight material such as cotton to protect yourself from the sun and to remain respectful to local culture. When haggling in the markets it’s important to keep the price in perspective: it’s easy to get carried away with the bargaining process and forget that the sellers still need to make a living. Anyone searching for a bargain should visit during the annual Dubai Shopping Festival where crazy promotions, city-wide discounts and raffles giving away Ferraris can be enjoyed.

Things to Do in Dubai

Festivals and Sporting Events

Among the top attractions in Dubai are international sporting events and festivals. This means that your first stop should be the reception desk of your hotel, to ask what is going on and where.

Having determined if there are any special events going on, the next thing is to try and plan your stay. There are that many Dubai tourist attractions to choose from that it is advisable to get your personal “must does” done first, as there may not be time to do everything.

Sightseeing

The incredible modern feats of architecture are some of the top attractions in Dubai.  Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Burj Al Arab, a stunningly beautiful building designed in the shape of a sail boat, both eye catching and spectacular. Palm Islands, the largest man made islands in the world, visible from space.

All these can be seen via a city tour. There are several options on how to take the tour but perhaps one of the best is the “Big Bus”. This is a London style double decker bus that allows you to get off where you like, returning to the tour at your leisure. Of course, if you would like that unique view of the city, you can always take the helicopter city tour.

As well as having enough shops to ensure that you will find something, the Mall also hosts an amusement park, aquarium and other attractions. The next must shop venue is the old Gold Souk. It is here where you will be glad that you chose the cheap flights to Dubai, as you will want all the money you can spare. This area contains 600 jewelry stores where gold is said to be sold at the cheapest prices anywhere in the world. It is said that there are 25 tons of gold on display in the windows of these shops.

If you have the time, there is still more to do.

Best 5 Shopping Venues in Dubai

Dubai is probably a shoppers dream. There are famous Malls in Dubai plus some that are not so famous. There are expensive shops in Dubai but then again it is the cheapest place in the world to buy gold. The thing that is for certain is that there certainly are a large variety of choices when it comes to where you should shop. The Dubai Mall is the biggest Mall in the world by size but is it the best shopping Mall in Dubai?

When trying to determine which the best shopping venue is for you, a lot depends on what it is you want to buy. Going to the best furniture store in the world isn’t going to help you if you are looking for a pair of shoes. In general shopping Malls try to cater for every buyer no matter what their need but if you are just looking for one item, then a Mall can sometimes prove a lengthy business for just one thing.

Here I have listed 5 of what are considered to be among the best places to shop. They are situated in different parts of the city as ultimately your choice of where to shop, will very likely be determined by your location at the time.

5.  Dubai Mall – This is the largest Mall, by area, in the world. It is easy to find as it is in the Burj Khalifa complex. The Burj Khalifa being the tallest building in the world should easily be recognizable. The Mall consists of 1,200 stores and 160 food and beverage outlets.

4.  Al Fahidi Street – Situated in Bur Dubai, this street and its surrounding shops give a large choice at reasonable prices. The street seems to have more atmosphere than an ultra modern Mall, plus in some of the smaller shops you may be able to partake in the age old Arab tradition of haggling over the prices.

Al Fahidi Street

3.  Souk Madinat Jumeirah – Situated near the Burj Al Arab, just off Jumeirah Beach Road, this shopping area was built to resemble a traditional Souk with its vibrant atmosphere. The combination of 75 shops and 20 popular cafes, seem to make this a magnet for the residents as well as the tourists.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

2. Mirdif City Center – This Mall is the newest shopping destination. The arrival of its 430 shops also saw the arrival of hundreds of new brands to the Emirates and so probably affords the widest choice of products in Dubai.

1. Gold Souk – Situated in Deira, this is not a place that offers the variety of products that the others have but its 600 jewelry shops makes it a must see place for shoppers. This is where Dubai got its name as the City of Gold and is said to be the cheapest place in the world to buy gold.

It also contains a toboggan run and a snowboard run. All relevant equipment can be rented on sight and instructors for all the disciplines are on hand to give lessons when needed. The park tries to maintain its mountain appeal by housing the St. Moritz Café which offers traditional mountain fare. For the not so “sporty” type, the complex also houses the largest indoor snow park in the world and so if you tire from the burning in the Arabian sun, you know you have a place you can go to cool off.

This is not a comprehensive list of all the parks in Dubai, merely a cross section of possibly the best. With the total number of parks in Dubai I am sure that where ever you are staying in the city there will be a park near to your location. Most of the parks feature playgrounds and sports areas, along with barbeque or picnic areas. As most of them are either on the beach or have a swimming pool, these parks are popular with the younger generation and obviously, depending on the level of supervision that each individual park has, may give the parents the opportunity to leave the children at one of these parks whilst they go to shops that are inevitably, close to the park.

Luxury in Dubai

Luxury is something that you will hear a lot in Dubai but it is also something that you will feel a lot too. It is almost as if the city is obsessed with the word and the ability to provide it.

This whole situation is possibly embodied by one of the most famous hotels in Dubai, Burj Al Arab. This is certainly at the top of a list as a luxury hotel in Dubai but it calls itself the only 7 Star Hotel in the world. Of course if it had a 7 star rating it would stand alone as 5 stars is the highest rating awarded to hotels.

The Burj Al Arab certainly is among the 5 Star Hotels in Dubai though, and it is said that to be a VIP there is nothing, to be especially noticed, you have to be a Very VIP.

There are other 5 star hotels in Dubai that can also boast luxury even if, unlike the Burj Al Arab, all the rooms are not suits.

So let us look at some of the not so famous hotels in Dubai that can also deliver luxury to a high degree.

Atlantis The Palm Jumeirah – Located on one of the largest man made islands in the world and designed to impress, just the look of this hotel exudes luxury. All the rooms and suits have a subtle oceanic or Arabic influence and views of either the blue Arabian Gulf or the unique island with its pristine white sands.

Al Maha Desert Resort – Just a 45 minute drive from the center of Dubai, this resort stands alone both in its location and in its unique, yet luxurious style. Each suite stands alone and is designed like a Bedouin tent. Like the Bedouin’s tent it harbors its own privacy by way of a long sweeping wooden verandah encompassing a private temperature controlled pool. Each suite is isolated in luxury yet affords views of the seemingly endless desert.

Al Murooj Rotana Hotel and Suites – Located next to the Dubai World Trade Centre and Exhibitions Centre, this hotel including its suites and rooms are all designed with sophisticated comfort in mind.

Needless to say that all of these 5 star hotels in Dubai come with the luxury and the service that you would expect from a 5 star establishment,  but they also come with that 5 star price that you could only  expect from a luxury hotel in Dubai.

Dubai is no longer just a destination for the business traveler; it is now the tourist destination of choice for all the family. So what are the Dubai kid’s attractions?

KidZania – Situated inside the Dubai Mall, KidZania is a child’s scale model of a town where the kids can “role play” in different jobs to receive payment in the town’s own currency. This currency can be spent within the town, so the more “role playing” that a child does, the more they can afford to spend in the various shops.

Dubai Dolphinarium – An aquarium featuring Dolphins that put on twice daily displays of their skills. The Dolphinarium also provides interactive activities for the kids.

Dubai, Hub of the World

Humble Beginnings

Dubai started as a relatively small fishing town, yet today ranks as one of the premium tourist destinations.

In the past it was necessary for any visitors between Europe and the Far East, to make a stop in their flight somewhere in the middle, the Middle East. This stop off could include a very boring night stay over. There was nothing much to do, perhaps go to your hotel, have a meal and an early night’s rest. Getting up in the morning and just waiting till the time of your flight.

Dubai

Dubai saw the need for more than just this. It purposely targeted these travelers, building facilities that they could enjoy, even if it was just for a one night stay over. They would cater to the business man travelling first class as well as any travelers on cheap flights to Dubai. They built attractions and luxury hotels and were rewarded by passengers making the physical choice of asking for a stop over in Dubai.

The stop over would be purposely extended from just one night to several nights, then leading to today when Dubai has become the tourist destination by choice, in its own right.

Dubai continued to build its hotels and attractions. It still caters for that one night stop over but now claims entertainment suitable for longer stays. Today, among the top Dubai attractions are Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, the largest Mall, amusement parks, golf courses and facilities for many varied water sports.

Considering that Dubai was built up especially to cater to the international airline passenger, it should come as no surprise that Dubai International Airport, this month opened the worlds first terminal specifically designed to cater to the Airbus A380 Super Jumbo. The terminal features two level walkways, facilitating easier boarding of the twin level super airliner. It is now estimated that with the number of stop over flights and the huge increase in final destinations to Dubai, the airport, in 2015 will overtake Heathrow Airport in London, as the busiest international airport.

Some of the new Dubai infrastructure is designed to cater to the rich, with at its heart the Burj Al Arab Hotel. This hotel is said to be the only 7 star hotel in the world and does not notice VIPs. It caters mainly for the V,VIP and is an example of what luxury really means.

Do not be misled though, as many of the top Dubai attractions are targeted to the not so wealthy. You do not need to fly first class to get there, there are an increasing number of cheap flights to Dubai, affording more of us the opportunity to witness, and appreciate, what is rapidly becoming a marvel in modern architecture. In fact the UAE’s own airline “Emirates” is one of the first places you should look for cheap Dubai flights.

Yes, the once small fishing town, with its overnight visitors has certainly changed and is striving to be the number one tourist destination of the future.
