The UK is one of the most diverse and fascinating vacation destinations in the world, largely due to its variety of locations and attractions. Despite being a relatively small corner of the world, the UK is home to everything from ancient castles and rolling green hills, to gorgeous modern cities, and everything in between, making for a wonderful range of tourist activities. Increasingly, however, the UK is also being recognized for another sort of tourism altogether: trips to sporting events.
There are incredible sporting events all over the world, but few destinations showcase the variety and mass appeal offered throughout a given year in the UK. So if you’re one to enjoy new sporting events, here are 10 to check out in the UK.
1. Wimbledon

We did a prior post on top London attractions, but if you’re a sports enthusiast nothing in the UK beats being at Wimbledon. An event known for its class and history, Wimbledon tends to bring out the very best of international tennis stars, and fosters an incomparable atmosphere. We’d recommend tuning into the tennis season a bit early in preparation for Wimbledon, as watching events earlier on the calendar gives you an idea of whom to root for and what to expect!
2. FA Cup Final

Played annually at London’s Wembley Stadium, the FA Cup Final is the event of the year for many English football fans. Essentially, it represents the championship for English club football.
3. British Grand Prix

This event takes place at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, and is the oldest F1 race on the annual calendar. Any grand prix is a thrill for racing fans, and this is the best such event in the UK.
4. The Open Championship

One of the PGA’s four major championships, the Open Championship – also called the British Open – is played every July, though not always at the same course.
5. London Premier League Match

The FA Cup Final is perhaps more dependable, but generally speaking any London football match between Premier League contenders is an outstanding thrill. Keep up to date at the Premier League website for match-ups, and see if you can catch a match at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, or Chelsea’s home, Stamford Bridge.
6. Cheltenham Races

The Cheltenham Festival horse races are a marquee event just a few short hours outside of London. There’s a bit of old world charm involved at the races, but the competition is top notch, and high betting volume makes for added enjoyment. The Cheltenham section at Betfair, an online sports betting site can keep you updated with the latest news and tips on the main races, should you wish to place a bet, or simply be informed on the competitors.
7. Henley Royal Regatta

Arguably the most famous regatta in the world, the Henley Royal Regatta is held at the beginning of July every year and lasts for five days. The event showcases essentially non-stop action in head-to-head knock out races run over the course of just over one mile on the River Thames.
8. Cartier International Polo

Polo may cater to a bit more of a niche audience, but it’s actually a thrilling sport to witness live. Sponsored by the Guard Polo Club, the Cartier International Polo event is a wonderful spectator event, at which audience style and fashion is as much at the forefront as the actual athletic activity.
9. The Boat Race

It’s a rowing event, on the River Thames, contested annually between Oxford and Cambridge. Nothing can get more authentically British than that! The Boat Race is simply oozing with tradition, and makes for a brilliant activity for travellers to witness.
10. World Cup Football

This is a sort of bonus item for 2014 UK travel. Sure, the World Cup is taking place in Brazil, but nothing beats watching matches in a pub or restaurant in a home country that’s passionate about its football! Find a great spot in London to watch an England World Cup match and you’ll likely have the time of your life. Incidentally, this is another event for which a bit of informed betting activity can enhance things even further. Enjoy!
Again, there are innumerable reasons to visit the UK. But for those with an interest in sporting events around the world, these are ten attractions and occasions in particular that shouldn’t be missed on a trip to the UK!
