As it is probably the best known city in the world, it is no surprise that the tourist attractions in New York are also among the best known in the world. Whether it is the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty, sightseeing in New York will always include names you are familiar with.
Some of the top destinations in New York are also considered among the top in the world and so you will never be short of things to see or do whilst you are there.
With so many things to do in New York, you will be spoiled for choice so here are some of them that may be considered as not to be missed:
1. Grand Central Terminal:
No need to catch a train, you can spend hours here just exploring this 100 year old icon of New York life. Look at the ceiling Mural, utter in the Whispering Gallery or walk the “secret” elevated passageways to marvel down on the concourse.
2. Empire State Building
Once again New York’s tallest building, the Empire State stands magnificent in the city’s skyline. For perhaps some of the most breathtaking views of the city, visit one of the observation decks on the 86th or 102nd floors.
3. Central Park:
When in the city that never sleeps, what better get away from the hustle and bustle than Central Park, best seen by renting a bicycle and riding the well marked routes past the Alice in Wonderland sculpture and Belvedere Castle, then over Bow Bridge.
4. Broadway:
No trip to New York would be complete without some singing and dancing, so take in one of the shows in the most famous theatre district in the world, Broadway. Take your choice between an old classic or a modern musical. Perhaps even a new version of an old classic.
5. The Metropolitan Museum:
Founded in 1870, New York’s Metropolitan Museum is one of the largest in the world, housing some of the world’s best collections. It is so big and there is so much to see here, that it is advised to wear some soft comfortable shoes for your planned visit.
6. Times Square:
Best known for New Years but is worth a visit at anytime. Just feel the pulse of New York City, see Good Morning America live or a taping for MTV. Take the kids to visit the huge stores of Toys-R-Us, Hershey’s or M & Ms.
7. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum:
Meet your favorite President, film or music star, perhaps even some characters like Jack Sparrow. OK, so they are only wax likenesses but they are extraordinarily accurate and provide the almost perfect photo op.
8. Greenwich Village:
The zigzagging streets with their brownstone houses offers a different view of New York City but with its assortment of boutiques, bars, cafes and night life, it is certainly worth a visit.
9. Top of the Rock:
The Rockefeller Center may be famous for its Christmas tree but it is the Top of the Rock that brings visitors all year round. Some say that the observation decks here give spectacular views to match those of the Empire State.
10. Staten Island Ferry:
The ferry is free and enjoyed by both native New Yorkers and tourists alike. Crossing the harbor it affords great views of not just the harbor but also the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan.
